Lando Norris edged out fellow driver and title rival the Australian for the top spot in the final moments of the practice session at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. Norris, who grabbed the title advantage from his teammate by a single point after winning in the Mexican Grand Prix recently, outpaced the Melbourne-born driver by 0.023 seconds. Until that point, Oscar Piastri had been the quickest of the McLaren pair for most of the session before the sprint shootout set to begin at the evening session. Max Verstappen, the other racer in realistic title contention, lying 36 points Norris, finished in P17 as his Red Bull team ran a different programme. His teammate the Japanese driver was the only driver to go off, albeit lightly, when he rotated at Turn Four soon after starting. The Japanese spun out over the exit kerbs before spinning across the escape zone, and was blessed to escape with just a light touch of the wall. The Ferrari of Lewis Hamilton also had a spin, at the conclusion of the session, rotating twice through the quick descending Mergulho turn approaching the final bend on to the main straight. The veteran finished practice in 19th, one place behind team-mate the Monegasque driver. The McLaren drivers were significantly quicker of the remaining drivers, with the German's car third fastest, 0.619 seconds slower than the Australian's time. The Aston Martin of Fernando Alonso was fourth quickest, with Sauber's Bortoleto in front of the Mercedes of Russell and Alpine's Pierre Gasly and the Williams of Carlos Sainz.
